We view the Concordia University Irvine 艺术部门 as an integral asset to Concordia’s distinctly Christian liberal arts education. We offer students a rich artistic environment where they grow intellectually 和 spiritually as visual artists.

Academic Opportunities

作为一个艺术专业的学生, you will be exposed to a variety of artistic opportunities including visiting artist lectures; practicum opportunities; 设计 internships; exhibition opportunities; 和 the chance for your work to appear in student publications. The John 和 Linda Friend permanent art collection occupies space in Grimm Hall 和 includes more than 40 art pieces worth $265,000, including a Rembr和t 和 a Salvador Dali. 艺术 majors display their work in student exhibitions, held at the end of each semester.

Extracurricular Activities

The 艺术专业 offers several opportunities to share your art with others at Concordia. Special projects can be created throughout the art curriculum that explore faith, diversity 和 multicultural themes.

Curriculum

At Concordia, makers 和 artists will be equipped to pursue a vocational path in the visual arts. Building on your core skills as an artist, you will practice drawing, 设计, 和色彩理论 while growing your knowledge of art history - forming a solid foundation for pursuing your individual passion. You can choose one of two emphases as your concentration.

ART 321: Painting I
3

This studio art course will introduce students to the basic approaches of oil 和 acrylic painting, painting techniques, form, 内容, visual appreciation, 和 personal expression through lectures, 示威活动, slide presentations, 工作室绘画, out-of-class painting, 草图, 和批评. A lab fee is required. 先决条件: 201年艺术. This class is offered every fall semester.

ART 351: Printmaking I

This course will provide an introduction to printmaking media with an emphasis on experimentation through techniques such as the monoprint, 救援, 和丝网印刷. 先决条件: 200年艺术和 201年艺术 or consent of the instructor. Lab fee is required. This class is offered alternate years in the fall semester.

ART 311: 艺术 History I

This is a survey course of Western art from the Prehistoric Period through the Renaissance, employing illustrated lectures, independent research, 博物馆参观, 和讨论. This class is offered alternate years in the spring semester.

ART 331: Sculpture I

This course will introduce students to the concepts, 材料, 和 methods of sculpture as creative ideas are developed in wood, 粘土, 石膏, 找到对象, 和纸板. Principles 和 use of equipment, material sources, 和 safety factors will be addressed. A lab fee is required. This class is offered alternate years in the spring semester.

Rachel Soo

Professor Soo is Co-Chair of the 艺术部门 at Concordia University Irvine. She teaches digital image manipulation, digital illustration, digital publishing, 排版, 和 graphic 设计 classes. Utilizing both traditional 和 digital media, she creates artwork which investigates issues of identity 和 culture. She explores self-discovery by examining memories, perceptions 和 personal relationships. Professor Soo earned her BFA in Commercial 艺术 from Concordia University in Nebraska, 和 an MFA in Integrated Visual 艺术 from Iowa State University, 埃姆斯. Soo lives in Irvine with her husb和和 two sons.

She also illustrated the children’s book Blue Lake Days by Sarah Shey.
